9. Environmental degradation of rivers: A search for answers:
Kerala’s rivers are threatened by the unsustainable human interventions that have happened over the years. This chapter investigates issues related to the degradation of Kerala’s rivers. It has sections on the degradation of catchment areas; degradation of regions submerged or affected by huge dams and hydro-electric projects; affects of unsustainable land-use, sand mining, pollution and land-grabs; impact of lifestyle changes; and so on. It also dwells on how global warming and climate change impact Kerala’s rivers.

10. Effects of the damage to river basins:
Whether they know it or not, every Malayalee in some way depends on the State’s rivers. So, anything that affects Kerala’s rivers, impacts the people. The destruction of Kerala’s river basins continues unabated, and this manifests in the form of drinking water shortages and other less apparent issues. Therefore, this chapter examines how the degradation of Kerala’s river basins will emerge as a threat to life itself.
